May is National Stroke Awareness Month – Memorial Day

It’s easy to go overboard during the holidays especially when that holiday is centered around food. With some moderation there’s no reason we shouldn’t feel good about enjoying ourselves. The National Stroke Association has a few good tips to make sure we stay healthy:

1. Next time you think about burgers and fries, think about this… Foods high in saturated fat can cause arteries to become blocked through the gradual build-up of cholesterol, affecting normal blood flow to the brain and causing a stroke. Learn tips for managing cholesterol levels at www.stroke.org/risk.

Instead: Incorporate a few healthy options on your plate maybe grilled veggies instead of potato salad or fruit instead of ice cream for dessert.

2. Stroke is one of the most preventable of all life-threatening health problems. Simple lifestyle changes, like incorporating exercise into your daily regime can help reduce stroke risk. Learn more prevention tips at www.stroke.org/risk

Instead: Let’s move! Dance, play and have a great time! Putting activity in your day can get your heart rate up as well as your spirits!

3. Stroke affects people of all ages. Get prevention tips and learn how to recognize warning signs at www.stroke.org.

Stay safe this holiday weekend!!!
